WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASSES?

Please wear loose light clothing for comfort e.g. t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms or light long sleeved tops and leggings with flat soled pumps or trainers.

DO I NEED TO WEAR UNIFORM?

No. Most martial arts or tai chi schools require you to wear a uniform of some sort. We sell adult’s and children’s uniforms, t-shirts and shoes. Our uniforms are traditional and are worn by students in China from the Shaolin schools. We also have tai chi uniforms for sale as well as weapons for classes e.g. tai chi swords and nunchaku and more. You are not required to wear a uniform at present but may do so if you choose.

WHAT CLASSES CAN I ATTEND FOR A BEGINNER?

You may attend any class on our timetable at any of our locations unless stated. Advanced classes are usually only attended by students that have taken their grading exams.

DO YOU OFFER GRADING EXAMS?

We do offer grading exams but not a frequent as other martial arts schools. They are not recommended for students who have been attending classes for less than 3-6 months. You will need to know the basic foundation e.g. kicks, stances, punches, forms etc. This applies to all of our disciplines. You may only progress by attending grading as you will be assessed on all the skills you’re learned and receive valuable feedback from Shifu Yang. For advanced skills and classes you have to show understanding and progress to reach the next level.

DO YOU HAVE A BELT SYSTEM?

We do not have a belt system like other martial arts e.g. Karate. We do have levels and you will be tested on your ability via grading. We do not have as many grading exams as other martial arts schools as we feel that setting down a good foundation is the best way to understand what you are learning and why it is important. We have students that have been with us for years that do kung fu and tai chi. They benefit highly from learning core skills from Shifu Yang at Shaolin Culture. Patience and a deep understanding of what you are learning and why is essential when practising martial arts. An experienced and skilled master such as Shifu Yang can help you with this.

HOW MANY CLASSES SHOULD I ATTEND?

At Shaolin Culture, we recommend attending classes at least once a week on a regular basis to attain a good standard of skills. Attending classes on a regular basis is the key to achieving your goals and reaping the overall benefits.

WHAT ARE WORKSHOPS?

Workshops are classes that are offered to all of our students to attend on a particular date of the month. They can be from 2 hours to 4 hours and will concentrate on a particular style, forms, weapon skills. For example, we offer workshops on tai chi sword or broad sword or staff forms. This is a great way to try a different style of kung fu or tai chi or expand on a certain skill that you may be learning during one of our hourly classes.
Workshops are popular and booking is recommended. We sometimes invite other Masters to attend our workshops so our students can benefit from learning along side some highly skills practitioners.

DO I HAVE TO TAKE OUT A SUBSCRIPTION?

No. Our prices are tailor made for all students. If you prefer to come along to our walk in classes once a week then you may choose the pay as you go rate that will entitle you to come along to any classes within the month as many times as you would like. We also offer an 8 week course also for some of our classes at certain locations (please see our class timetable) as well as online classes. I AM INTERESTED IN TRYING A CLASS. CAN I WATCH BEFORE ATTENDING?

If you would like to attend one of our classes then you are welcome to come along. We do not allow people to come into the hall and just watch as it can be off-putting to our students that are learning in the classes with Shifu Yang. We offer your first class without any obligations to join us.
