WHY DO I PAY MEMBERSHIP?
Membership covers you for Member-to Member/Public Liability Insurance and Personal Injury. It also provides you with a discounted class and workshop rate throughout the year. Membership is on an annual basis for both adults and children. It covers you for all classes at all locations you choose to come along to.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASSES?
For your first trial class you may wear loose light clothing for comfort e.g. t-shirt, tracksuit bottoms or light long sleeved tops and leggings with flat soled pumps or trainers.
DO I NEED TO WEAR UNIFORM?
Yes. Most martial arts or tai chi schools require you to wear a uniform of some sort. We sell adult’s and children’s uniforms, t-shirts and shoes. Our uniforms are traditional and are worn by students in China from the Shaolin schools. We also have tai chi uniforms for sale as well as weapons for classes e.g. tai chi swords and nunchaku and more.
WHAT CLASSES CAN I ATTEND FOR A BEGINNER?
You may attend any class on our timetable at any of our locations unless stated. Advanced classes are usually only attended by students that have taken their grading exams.
DO YOU OFFER GRADING EXAMS?
We usually offer grading exams twice a year. They are not recommended for students who have been attending classes for less than 3-6 months. You will need to know the basic foundation e.g. kicks, stances, punches, forms etc. This applies to all of our disciplines. You may only progress by attending grading as you will be assessed on all the skills you’re learned and receive valuble feedback from Shifu Yang. For advanced skills and classes you have to show understanding and progress to reach the next level.
DO YOU HAVE A BELT SYSTEM?
We do not have a belt system like other martial arts e.g. Karate. We do have levels and you will be tested on your ability via grading. We do not have as many grading exams as other martial arts schools as we feel that setting down a good foundation is the best way to understand what you are learning and why it is important. We have students that have been with us for years that do kung fu and tai chi. They benefit highly from learning core skills from Shifu Yang at Shaolin Culture. Patience and a deep understanding of what you are learning and why is essential when practising martial arts. An experienced and skilled master such as Shifu Yang can help you with this.
HOW MANY CLASSES SHOULD I ATTEND?
At Shaolin Culture, we recommend attending classes at least once a week on a regular basis to attain a good standard of skills. Attending classes on a regular basis is the key to achieving your goals and reaping the overall benefits. We offer classes 6 days a week and our membership covers you to come along to any class at any location on any day that suits you. We offer class subscriptions to all students that want to do more than one session per week. Overall you will get a discounted rate on classes.
WHAT ARE WORKSHOPS?
Workshops are classes that are offered to all of our students to attend on a particular date of the month. They can be from 4 hours to 6 hours and will concentrate on a particular style, forms, weapon skills. For example, we offer workshops on tai chi sword or broad sword or staff forms. This is a great way to try a different style of kung fu or tai chi or expand on a certain skill that you may be learning during one of our hourly classes.
Workshops are popular and booking is recommened. We sometimes invite other Masters to attend our workshops so our students can benefit from learning along side some highly skills practitioners.
DO I HAVE TO TAKE OUT A SUBSCRIPTION?
No. Our prices are tailor made for all students. If you prefer to come along to classes once a week then you may choose the pay as you go rate or if you want to do more than one class a week you may take out a monthly suscription that will entitle you to come along to any classes within the month as many times as you would like. Taking out a subscription is a very convenient way to pay and covers you for all classes in all locations. And many students with subscriptions choose to do both sessions in tai chi and kung fu. We also offer 6 months subscriptions and annual which workout much cheaper for our students that choose to attend classes regularly.
I AM INTERESTED IN TRYING A CLASS. CAN I WATCH BEFORE ATTENDING?
If you would like to attend one of our classes then you are welcome to come along. We do not allow people to come into the hall and just watch as it can be off-putting to our students that are learning in the classes with Shifu Yang. We offer your first class for only £10 without any obligations to join us.
HOW OLD SHOULD YOU BE TO ATTEND?
All ages are welcome to come along and join our classes. We recommend children as young as 5 years old as they can concentrate better for the duration of the classes from this age onwards. If you have a child that is younger that you would like to learn from Shifu Yang at Shaolin Culture then you may contact us. We would be happy to help you.
If you are over 60+ years, it’s never to late to learn with us. We have older students reaping benefits for a healthier lifestyle to date. Some students have health issues also. You may speak to Shifu Yang before attending the class on these matters and we also recommend speaking to your GP. Most recommend Tai Chi for health and fitness.
DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE SESSIONS?
Shifu Yang does offer private one-to-one sessions. You may contact him direct either by email or phone and he will be happy to discuss your requirements and schedule. Sessions can be held at a convenient location to you or at one of our locations in London or Bromley, Kent. Sessions are usually for one hour and are held on a day and time that suits you. Weekends included.
